Private Security Officer License Renewal
Utah Private Security Officer Licenses Expire On
November 30th Of Every Even Numbered Year (2024)
All security licenses automatically expire on the date shown on the license. To continue working the license must be renewed and you must receive a new license, before its expiration date. A private security officer license can be renewed anytime after September 1st of the expiration year. It is your responsibility to ensure DOPL always has your current email address to receive a renewal notice containing an online renewal ID number.
Before you can renew an armed or unarmed private security officer license you must have completed ALL applicable continuing education requirements. Failure to complete this requirement can result in having your license suspended or revoked and criminal penalties.
Unlawful Conduct: It is ILLEGAL to work as an unarmed or armed private security officer without a valid private security officer license. As described in 58-1-501(1)(a) and 58-1-502 it is punishable as a criminal offense to practice your occupation or profession beyond the expiration of your license.
R156-63a-304. Continuing Education for Armed and Unarmed Private Security Officers as a Condition of Renewal.
(1) Armed and unarmed private security officers shall complete at least 32 hours of continuing education during each two-year renewal cycle. A minimum of 16 hours shall be core continuing education; the remaining hours may consist of professional continuing education or core continuing education.
(2) In addition to the 32 hours of core/professional continuing education, an armed private security officer shall complete at least 16 hours of continuing firearms education and training during each two-year renewal cycle.
Did You Upgrade To An Armed Private Security Officer License?
If you have an unarmed private security officer license and have obtained an armed license, you do not need to maintain both licenses. Only renew the armed license and let the unarmed license expire. Armed private security officers can perform all unarmed security duties as described in 58-63-304.(3), renewing the unarmed license is a waste of money, and it is useless to you.
Do You Want To Downgrade From An Armed License To An Unarmed License?
If you have an armed license and you did not complete the required firearm continuing education, or you no longer want or need the armed license, and you want to “downgrade” to an unarmed private security officer license, you must;
- Complete the required 32 hours of continuing education.
- Contact DOPL, notifying them that you no longer want to keep the armed license.
- Complete the paper renewal application for unarmed private security officers. You cannot renew online.
Military Members - Did Your Security License Expire While You Were On Deployment?
If you are a member of the U.S. military and your security license has expired. At the same time, you were deployed, it will continue to be valid for 90 days after the last date of the deployment listed on the service member’s deployment order.
As provided in 71A-8-103 DOPL will reactivate your unarmed or armed private security officer license until the next date that the license expires or for the period that the license is typically issued, at no cost if the service member, National Guard member, or reservist:
- Requests renewal of the license within 90 days after the termination date of the activation or deployment orders.
- Provides DOPL with a copy of the individual’s official orders calling the member or reservist to active duty or deployment, and official orders discharging the member or reservist from active duty or deployment. and
- Meets all requirements necessary for the renewal of the license, except for continuing education or training.
This option DOES NOT apply to:
- Regularly scheduled annual training;
- In-state active National Guard and reserve orders; or
- Orders that do not require the service member to relocate outside of this state.

Reinstatement Fee
If an unarmed or armed private security officer license has expired, you must pay an additional late fee to reinstate the license. If you fail to reinstate your license within two years of the expiration date of your license, you must meet current requirements for licensure, retake all required initial training and submit a new application as a new applicant.
- Within 30 days: + $20.00 = $62.00.
- Over 30 days but within 2 years + $50.00 = $92.00.
How To Renew
After you have completed all applicable continuing education, there are two options to renew a private security officer license.
1. Renew Online
You must have a UtahID account. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one. You must also have the following:
- Unarmed or armed private security officer license number shown on the license
- Social security number
- Renewal ID that DOPL provided in the renewal email. If you do not have or have lost your Renewal ID, you can request a replacement.
- Debit or credit card
Go to https://id.utah.gov. After logging in, follow the directions under EXISTING LICENSE HOLDERS to link your license to your account. Then, follow the online instructions for renewing your license. A renewed license will be emailed to you the next business day after your online renewal is completed.
2. Complete A Paper Renewal Application
