Verify Eligibility to Purchase Firearms

Federal laws regulate firearm purchases. You must be:

• At least 18 years old for rifles or shotguns
• At least 21 years old for handguns, receivers, or NFA items

Additionally, individuals with felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or certain legal restrictions are prohibited from purchasing firearms. Utah has no additional restrictions beyond federal law.

Acquire Necessary Permits (If Applicable)

Utah does not require permits, but some states require a permit or license to purchase firearms. These may involve safety courses and additional background checks. You must confirm the regulations in your state.

Step 2: Making an Online Gun Purchase

Choose a Reputable Online Gun Dealer

Choose a licensed, reputable dealer like Utah FAST. Look for clear policies and customer reviews to ensure a reliable experience.

Understand Sale Restrictions

Utah does not impose restrictions on firearm ownership, but some states restrict magazine capacities, firearm types, or features. Learn more on our State Restrictions page.

Select a Federal Firearms License (FFL) Dealer

Firearms must be shipped to an FFL dealer who completes the transfer. Select an FFL at checkout, or choose Pick Up In-Store if you prefer Utah FAST to handle the process.

Notify Your FFL Dealer

Contact your FFL dealer to confirm they can accept your firearm. Ensure they send their license to the seller for compliance.

Step 3: After Your Purchase

Picking Up Your New Gun

When your firearm arrives at the FFL dealer, they will notify you. Most dealers charge a firearm transfer fee and a background check fee. Make sure you know the price before making your purchase.
